Obstacle
The District Department of Transportation’s DC Streetcar service was developed as part of a broader effort to reimagine transit in the District, enhancing connectivity between neighborhoods, improving mobility, and supporting equitable economic development across the city. However, the service faced challenges, including low ridership, limited public awareness, and the need to better engage communities across the corridor. These issues were compounded by evolving public perception and, ultimately, the decision to discontinue service, creating an additional need for clear, strategic communications and stakeholder engagement during a period of transition.

Approach
Our strategy combined targeted campaign planning, social media management, and event activation to connect with riders and stakeholders across the corridor. We developed and executed multi-channel campaigns, managed ongoing social content to drive awareness and engagement, and supported community events to encourage ridership and build trust, Following the decision to discontinue service, KGL shifted to leading transition communications, including public messaging, media relations, and stakeholder outreach. Deliverables included press releases, social media management, campaign execution, and community engagement initiatives.
Results
KGL Communications implemented a multi-channel engagement strategy to grow awareness and increase ridership for DDOT’s services. This included social media contest to drive engagement and website traffic, generating 463K+ impressions, 86K engagements, and 1.6K unique website visits. Our monthly newsletter was consistently distributed, helping expand a steady base of new subscribers. KGL supported participation in key community events, including the H Street Festival, to maintain a visible, active presence in the community.
