Obstacle

Connecticut Avenue serves as one of the District's primary commuter corridors, connecting Northwest neighborhoods with downtown Washington, D.C., and Maryland. The corridor also supports a vibrant business community that seeks a safer, more pedestrian-friendly environment to drive continued economic growth. As DDOT advanced the Connecticut Avenue Streetscape and Deck-Over Project, construction disrupted daily travel and business operations. DDOT needed a strategic public relations team to engage residents, businesses, commuters, and visitors, address community concerns, minimize disruptions, and keep stakeholders informed throughout the project.

Approach

KGL Communications serves as the primary communications partner for DDOT's Connecticut Avenue Deckover and Streetscape Project, coordinating engagement among project leadership, contractors, District agencies, community organizations, businesses, and residents. Our team manages day-to-day stakeholder communications, ensuring project partners remain aligned while delivering timely, proactive, and transparent information throughout construction.

A key component of our approach is direct business outreach. KGL maintains regular, face-to-face communication with small, locally owned businesses along the corridor, providing construction updates, addressing concerns, and helping businesses navigate temporary disruptions. We collaborate closely with the Dupont Circle BID and Dupont Circle Main Streets to coordinate outreach, align messaging, and incorporate business community feedback into ongoing communications.

To help sustain economic activity during construction, KGL developed and implemented targeted marketing campaigns that encouraged residents, commuters, and visitors to continue supporting corridor businesses. These efforts combined branded messaging, coordinated promotions, and strategic placement across digital, print, and on-the-ground channels to maintain visibility and drive foot traffic throughout the project.

In addition to community outreach, KGL coordinates communications across multiple project partners, translating complex technical information into clear, accessible messaging for a variety of audiences. By anticipating issues, responding quickly to stakeholder concerns, and maintaining consistent communications across all touchpoints, KGL helps keep the project informed, connected, and responsive throughout every phase of construction.

Results

KGL Communications deployed more than 20 communications and outreach initiatives, supported by continuous, multi-channel engagement throughout the project. These efforts increased traffic to the project website, strengthened engagement between residents and local businesses, and improved wayfinding throughout the corridor.
